wooden boat build non-sme survey: Interactive presentation of results

Intro: Non-SME Survey

This non-SME survey was employed as an ethnographic tool, aimed at gathering general user feedback on the boat build artefact idea, helping inform function and design decisions. The same survey was given to SMEs at the exact same time to gather more pointed feedback. Before seeing the results, let's first understand a little more about this test set's profile. Overall 00 people responded, with 00% being Female and 00% Male.

Use as a Guide?

This was one of two questions aimed at finding out how users would derive value from the boad build artefact. This would help in how to conceptualise content. The first question was - "Would you use an app or a web site to guide you through an involved process like building a boat?"

Just FYI?

The second value question was to try and find out what sort of "passive" interest there might be in viewing/reading the content. The question posed was - "Would you take an interest in reading/viewing the process of building a boat without actually building one yourself?"

Suggestions?

After asking the test set to rate the importance of a set of pre-defined core features, I asked for suggestions on what they thought should/could be included.

Here is a selection of the comments given:

"Gotchas. Things to avoid before you start, common mistakes, likely duration of project in hours."

"Maybe interviews?"

"Some type of manuals for building certain (more difficult) parts of the boat."

"How to paint it, maintain it, protect it from wind, weather etc."

"Blueprints and FAQs, More details on alternative materials or tools that could be used."

"Modern alternatives to traditional materials (where possible)."

"Time line, break up of project into weekly or weekend mini projects."

"Progress images - Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, etc."

And Finally....

The last question was a general one - "Have you any ideas, suggestions or advice on how this type of app or website could be provide more value to the end user?"

Again I received some very useful commentary and hints about specific items:

"A way of sharing your experience of building your boat, photos, blog, tweets."

"It's a great idea and one that should definitely be undertaken to preserve the craft."

"Easy to find, easy to access."

"I do believe skills like this should be preserved."

"I watch a lot of YouTube videos to find out how to do things."

"Having to search and download an app that I might have to pay for would probably put me off."

"If it was more of a "how to" video I would probably use it more readily."

"No "register to view"."
